The Marine Environmental Science Collection (MESC) consists of rare and difficult to obtain limited distribution documents that have been produced by governments and industrial agencies. They generally contain environmental data, and may have interpretive sections. Some documents contain copies of government permits and associated correspondence. Some listings include a summary or abstract.
The collection is arranged in five primary research subjects, each divided into case studies. Within each case study, documents are arranged in alphabetical order by author. An item from this collection can be retrieved by citing: Acc. No. 1996-006, the author and title of document, and the box number.
The documents were collected by Derek Ellis to support marine environmental case studies he conducted. For a more complete understanding of his work and research interests, see also Derek Ellis fonds and his bibliographies.
Bougainville Copper Mine in Papua New Guinea, located in the distant mountains, opted in 1970 to discharge its tailings to a river valley, from which the tailings flowed over the flood-plain to form a prograding delta at the sea edge.
