4. Slides, 1953-57

Slides have been arranged as much as possible in date order, and the archive identification numbers are in numerical order. The slides have been arranged in each sheet from top left to right, then progressively down the rows, continuing from left to right. Slides from 1953 in silver-backed mounts are back-to-front, i.e, the slide number is on what is the back of the slide. The other slides have been placed in the sheets with front forward.

The town names are those used by Derek Ellis in his journals. Some have since been changed for Inuit names. They are as follows: Frobisher Bay = Iqaluit, Coppermine = Kugluktuk, Spence Bay = Taloyoak.

There are also black and white photographs and negatives without prints (mostly from 1953) in separate files, including some from Rigolet in Labrador, where Ellis stayed for a week prior to reaching Frobisher Bay. In 1953 he had two cameras, one taking black and white film, and the other either colour slides or colour negatives. He seemed to have run short on colour film at Padloping.

2.19
Sheets 1-4 1953 expedition for intertidal biodiversity assessments to eastern Baffin Island (Frobisher Bay, Pangnirtung, Padloping Island, then supply ship C.D.Howe on its annual supply run to eastern arctic settlements). June - September. In part with Professor V. Wynne-Edwards of Aberdeen University, Scotland, and as a part of the 1953 expedition to Baffin Island by the Arctic Institute of North America, leader P. Baird. There are black and white negatives of some of the sampling stations.
Sheet 1
Frobisher Bay, June 6 - July 12. D. Ellis with Inuit guides traveling by dog-sledge and boat in Frobisher Bay taking intertidal biological samples.
1.1-1.2 Two slides of Frobisher Bay village, in July after snow-melt and the sea-ice had drifted away. 1.2 HBC store with trader Ross Peyton and assistant. 1.3-1.7 First sampling trip by dog-sledge, June 6 - July 12. Sea-ice initially present, but snow largely gone from land. 1.8-1.10 In Inuit camp. 1.11-rest of sheet. Balance of first sampling trip carrying boat on the sledge to allow crossing water leads appearing between melting sea-ice. D. Ellis with guide Akaka. Slides of the solid ice-foot on the upper levels of the shores. The ice-foot keeps the upper intertidal barren of biodiversity, through freezing and scouring. The tidal range is about 12 metres.
Sheet 2
Frobisher Bay, July 12-27, after arrival of Prof. Wynne-Edwards. Boat travel first to Silliman's Fossil Mountain, then to the mouth of Frobisher Bay.
2.1-2.3 Silliman's fossil mountain (see also black and white negatives) Balance of slides taken while traveling down Frobisher Bay. Includes slides of traveling through dense drifting sea-ice. 2.5 is Prof. Wynne-Edwards keeping ice-watch. Some slides may be between Frobisher Bay and Cumberland Sound.
Sheet 3
Cumberland Sound, August.
3.1 The village of Pagnirtung. 3.2 On RCMP boat, Corporal Johnny Daoust on wheelhouse, Prof. Wynne-Edwards partly visible, Inuit deck-hand, name unknown. 3.3 Dead white whale floating in water, was towed to beach (3.9) and left until later, when the skin was removed and taken to Pangnirtung (3.13). 3.7 Is the C.D. Howe on arrival at Pangnirtung. 3.8 Shows the extensive low tide flat at Pangnirtung. 3.17 Shows intertidal zonation with biological growth on the lower part of the shore. 3.18 Was taken by geographer H.Thompson from the main expedition to the glacier.
Sheet 4
On board the C.D.Howe on its supply trip through the eastern arctic.
4.1 The C.D. Howe and the d'Iberville rendezvous in Craig Harbour. Other slides show places, and the set of cartoons about the 1953 expedition drawn by James Houston, Canadian author and artist. 4.6 shows Prof Wynne-Edwards, A. Watson and D. Ellis. Some slides show named members of the expedition on the C.D. Howe, and after return to Montreal. 4.15 D. Ellis, Barbara Battle (widow of the Ben Battle who died on the expedition) and Adam Watson (ornithology student of Prof. Wynne-Edwards). There are also negatives without prints of some of the places supplied, e.g. Clyde River. Sheets 5-17 1954-55 expedition along the route of the northwest passage, from Coppermine to Pond Inlet, to obtain biological records, especially on benthic biodiversity and benthic feedstocks for arctic marine wildlife (fish, birds and mammals).
2.20
Sheets 5-8
Coppermine and nearby. Slides of the area and its fish, birds and mammals, with sampling through the sea-ice. Inuit assistant was Walter Bolt, son of Ikey Bolt who featured in Steffansson's expeditions.
5.17 Unusual shot of a seal pup that had lost its breathing hole. It had the misfortune to be found by Ellis. 6.4 Is a repeat exposure of the midnight sun. 7.19 Is an Inuit camp showing arctic char being dried on the rocks. 8.18-8.20 Show the activity at Coppermine at ship-time, when the next year's stores are unloaded, and pelts shipped out.
2.21
Sheets 9-10
Coppermine-Spence Bay by HBC supply vessels.
10.16 Shows how an Inuit family traveled in the bow of the supply vessel when moving between villages served by the supply vessel. 10.17 and 10.20 Show Spence Bay in 1954.
Sheet 11
Arctic Bay, September - December 1954. Inuit names may be available from journals, but could not be found on a first search.
11.4 Is the HBC trader's housekeeper (Regelee) and Ellis. 11.14 Aerial view was taken from the plane which flew Ellis from Spence Bay to Arctic Bay.
Sheet 12
Winter sampling near Arctic Bay and at Igloolik after travel there by dog sledge January-March 1955. The main Inuit guide was Cowtak, and at Igloolik they stayed with his brother Panapakutchuk. As he was hunting seal and walrus, and any waterfowl seen, Ellis was able to take stomach samples for winter feeding studies. 12.2 Notice Cowtak's seal-skin mini-boat easily carried by sledge, and used in winter for retrieving dead seals in narrow leads of water among moving ice. 12.5 Notice the boy traveling with the hunting party, and the other small upright object on the left. It is not another boy, but a frozen walrus foetus taken from a female walrus that they had shot. It quickly froze so was stuck upright in the snow as a joke by one of the Inuit. These slides were all obtained by keeping the camera warm under Ellis' parka against his body, and whenever needed quickly pulling it, taking the picture and replacing it. The daily temperature minimum ranged between -30 and -50 F. Ellis must have been carrying a max/min thermometer. 12.20 Shows an Inuit servicing an automated seal-harpoon. The device and rifle were installed at a seal's breathing hole with a light rod extending down into the water. The seal came to breathe, hit the rod which rose up and triggered the rifle, which shot a harpoon into the seal. 12.15 and 12.16 Show Cowtak glazing the sled runners prior to traveling in the morning. The runners have a frozen mud base which needs frequent glazing, which was done by wiping hot water onto the mud. It instantly froze.
2.22
Sheet 13
Travel by dog-sledge from Arctic Bay to Pond Inlet, April 1955 with guides (brothers) Cowtak and Ataguchuk from Arctic Bay. 13.18 and 13.19 Show the two Inuit guides (Kaminerk and Paniloo) from Pond Inlet to whom Ellis transferred at the northeast tip of Borden Peninsula, facing Lancaster Sound.
Sheets 14-17
Pond Inlet, April - September 1955. Slides showing sampling for arctic char, water quality, and seabed biodiversity. Initially snow and sea-ice were present, and sampling was from dog-sledge, but after the sea ice melted and drifted away sampling was by boat, at times sledded to the ice edge (14.10).
2.23
